me then - I was probably 5 years old - but it always stuck with me, and later in life, it would pop back into the forefront of my brain and just dwell there for a while.
As years go on and as life takes its shots at me, I still go to it. But now I am actually beginning to understand it more.
The Lord is my shepherd.
(This speaks of relationship - the one between me and God).
I shall not want.
(God is going to take care of me and my needs).
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
(He gives me rest... and if I'm smart I will recognize that as long as I stick to Him, I can be at rest in everything - mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually and even financially).
He leads me beside quiet waters.
(He refreshes me and gives me peace).
He restores my soul.
(He heals me, inside and out).
He guides me in the paths of righteousness.
(He leads me in the right direction so that I'm safe and secure).
For His name's sake.
(My purpose here on earth).
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.
(He tests me and helps me grow. He knows the enemy is prowling and wants me to stay close to Him).
I will fear no evil.
(He protects me from harm and from the enemy because he loves me).
For You are with me.
(He is always with me, He is faithful).
Your rod and Your staff they comfort me.
(He disciplines me when I am headed in the wrong direction because He doesn't want harm to come to me).
You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies.
(He gives me hope... even when the world crashes around me I have hope).
You anoint my head with oil.
(He sees me as sacred, worthy, pure).
My cup overflows.
(He gives me abundance... in life, in joy, in freedom, in peace... He wants me to lack for nothing).
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life.
(He blesses me with all good things).
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord.
(I have security in Him, knowing that He has me, my life, my situation, and even my death).
(Always, eternity - I will be forever with Him).
And when I break it down, line by line, verse by verse, I cannot tell you how much better life could be! No matter what I face, God is with me, He is for me, and Heaven is my home.
